Feeling Ki
It is possible for an individual to 'feel' ki, and with training, one can even perceive another person's aura or ki. This sensation is often described as a tingling or warm feeling. To experience the aura, it's essential to clear your mind of other thoughts. Relaxation exercises can help prepare you to sense the aura.
Additionally, by concentrating your thoughts and making slight adjustments in your position, you can alter the flow of ki within your body. This can either make you feel significantly heavier or lighter, depending on your desired effect.
Kyo and Jitsu Energy
Oriental medicine postulates that energy is the foundation of all life and classifies it into two types: kyo and jitsu. When energy is low or deficient, it is referred to as kyo, and when there is an excess or the energy is high, it is known as jitsu.
These two factors play a significant role in the type of shiatsu that is administered. Experienced shiatsu practitioners can determine the recipient's energy type through touch. The practice of shiatsu is adjusted based on the recipient's energy level.
- For kyo types (low or deficient energy), a gentle and sensitive touch is required. Stretched positions can be held for a longer duration to bring more energy to that part of the body. Pressure applied by the thumb or palm can also be sustained for a longer period, typically around 10-15 seconds.
- For jitsu types (high or excess energy), stretches can be performed more quickly to disperse the excess energy. Shaking or rocking specific body areas can have a similar effect. Pressure applied by the thumbs or palms should be held for a shorter duration to expel excess energy.
