What is Proper Exercise?
Various modern physical culture systems aim to develop muscles through mechanical movements and exercises. In Yoga, the body is considered a vessel for the soul's journey toward perfection. Yogic physical exercises, known as Asanas, are designed not only to develop the body but also to enhance mental faculties and spiritual capacities.
Asanas, or Yoga postures, are meant to be held steadily for some time, although this is an advanced practice. Initially, the focus is on increasing body flexibility.
The body's youth is closely tied to its flexibility. Yoga exercises prioritize the health, strength, and flexibility of the spine, which houses the vital nervous system, the body's telegraphic network. These exercises enhance circulation, ensuring that the nerves receive the necessary nutrients and oxygen.
Asanas also have an impact on the internal organs and the endocrine system, which includes glands and hormones.
Traditionally, Yogis practice Surya Namaskar, the sun salutation, before performing Asanas. While there are numerous Asanas (according to scriptures, 8,400,000 in total), the practice of the 12 basic postures encapsulates the essence and major benefits of this remarkable system.
