Urithritis in Men
When to Seek Medical Care
If you have moderate urethritis that subsides after using a new soap or lotion, you might not need to visit your doctor. However, more urethritis instances might require examination.
If you are experiencing pain with urination following a medical procedure, contact your health care provider to discuss the need for evaluation or treatment. The pain could indicate the start of an infection or be a predicted adverse effect of the surgery.
Within 24 hours, medical care is required for any other occurrences of burning while urinating.
Urethritis is probably not an emergency, but you will want to get relief promptly. Especially if you are experiencing other signs of illness, such as
fever, nausea, vomiting
back and abdominal pain
, you may need emergency care.
These signs may indicate that the infection has spread outside of the urethra. These potentially dangerous disorders need to be evaluated right either by your physician or at an emergency room. See the emergency room of a hospital right away if you have any injuries to your penis, such as an object stuck in your urethra. These circumstances have the potential to quickly develop into a fatal infection.
Self-Care at Home
Home care for urethritis relieves its symptoms.
Drink fluids to dilute your urine. This will lessen the pain you feel when urinating.
You may take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
medications (such as Motrin or Advil) and acetaminophen for pain control.
Sitz baths can help with the burning associated with chemical irritant urethritis. To take a sitz bath, fill the tub with 6-8 inches of warm water, just enough to cover your genitals when you sit in the tub. Try these a few times a day. Don't use soap or anything else in the bathtub that may irritate already sore areas.
Prevention
Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including urethritis, involves abstinence (no sexual relations) and the use of condoms, or other barrier protection.
Avoiding irritants that inflame the skin or urethra is advised.. If a soap, lotion, cologne, or detergent leads to urethral irritation, stop using it.
