Torsion Testis
Introduction
Testicular swelling and pain should be evaluated on an emergent basis. The evaluation is best done in an emergency room, where rapid imaging is available and there is quick access to surgical intervention. The testicle has a six-hour window during which it can be recovered; testicular salvage rates are 100% when surgical therapy is received during this window. The testicle is no longer recoverable after six hours, and if surgical repair is carried out beyond twenty-four hours, the testicle is lost.
Questions to Ask the Doctor
You should notify your doctor immediately of your condition and ask where your doctor wants you to be evaluated. You may also ask your doctor to notify a urologist in the event surgery is needed.
Next Steps
After surgery, the patient will learn if the testicle was able to be salvaged.
Follow-up
The surgeon will inform the patient as to when follow-up is needed.
Prevention
Torsion episodes should not occur again after the orchiopexy.
Prevention
Even with one testicle lost, fertility should be preserved. Physically, there won't be any noticeable alterations other than the testicle disappearing.
