When to Seek Medical Care
If you experience any of the following, it may indicate a serious condition and you should consult your healthcare provider:
If you notice rectal bleeding, it's crucial to see your healthcare provider promptly. This applies even if the bleeding stops on its own. Bleeding can be a sign of diverticulitis or other serious conditions. If there is substantial or continuous bleeding, head to a hospital emergency department immediately.
The following symptoms suggest a complication and necessitate an immediate visit to an emergency department:
- Worsening abdominal pain
- Persistent fever accompanied by abdominal pain
- Severe vomiting preventing you from keeping any food or fluids down
- Persistent constipation over an extended period
- Severe pain or other symptoms similar to those experienced during a previous episode of diverticulitis
If you encounter these symptoms, do not attempt to drive yourself. Arrange for a family member or companion to drive you, or call 911 for emergency medical transport. Calling for an ambulance can expedite your journey to the hospital in an emergency.
Self-Care at Home

Adopt a high-fiber diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes like beans, peas, and lentils. These foods contain indigestible elements that pass through your colon.
Stay well-hydrated to maintain soft stools.
Engage in regular physical activity to promote proper bowel function.
