CAUSES β’ Unknown for most β’ Secondary reaction to cervical infl ammatory or hormonal stimulation -------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS β’ Prolapsed submucous myoma or endometrial polyp β’ Other causes of intermenstrual bleeding β’ Decidualized endometriumSPECIAL TESTS β’ Diagnosis usually made by pelvic examination β’ Perform Pap smear prior to treatment β’ Send to pathology for analysis
TYPENOTES
SURGICAL MEASURES: Simple surgical excision in offi ce with traction or electrocautery, control bleeding with silver nitrate, Monsels solution or cautery. Larger polyps may require ligature. ACTIVITY : Avoid sexual intercourse, tampons, and douching for 2 weeks POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: β’ Bleeding and mild pain with removal β’ Spotting for 1 or 2 days EXPECTED COURSE/PROGNOSIS: Almost always benign. Very rare incidence of dysplasia in polyp. Very rare possibility of malignancy arising.
