β’ Treatment of the underlying fungal infection
β’ Symptomatic treatment of pruritus with antihistamines and/or topical steroids if needed
β’ Treatment for secondary bacterial infection
ACTIVITY As tolerated
PATIENT EDUCATION
β’ Avoidance of hot humid conditions which promote fungal growth
β’ Aeration of susceptible body areas, eg, wear sandals or open foot wear
β’ If possible, wearing boxer shorts or loose fi tting clothing, drying off wet skin after bathing, using powders and
antiperspirants to make the environment less conducive to fungal growth
DRUG(S) OF CHOICE Antifungals - topical and/or systemic
ALTERNATIVE DRUGS
β’ Topical or systemic antibiotics for any secondary infection
β’ Antihistamines for any pruritus
β’ Topical steroids for pruritus
β’ Systemic steroids only if reaction is fl orid or generalized nature
PATIENT MONITORING Followup in a few days or a week pending clinical course
PREVENTION/AVOIDANCE
β’ Minimize factors for developing fungal infections
β’ Prompt treatment of any developing fungal infection
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS
β’ Secondary bacterial infection (cellulitis)
EXPECTED COURSE/PROGNOSIS
After appropriate treatment, virtual resolution in a few days to two weeks
