A white, odourless or almost odourless, crystalline powder.
Practically insoluble in water and in ether ; soluble 1 in 230 of alcohol and 1 in 210 of chloroform ; soluble in pyridine and dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides.
Acetohexamide is a sulphonylurea hypoglycaemic. Its duration of action is 12 hours or more. It is given by mouth in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in a usual initial dose of 250 mg daily before breakfast. This may then be increased by increments of 250 to 500 mg daily at intervals of 5 to 7 days to a maintenance dose of up to 1.5 gm daily ; increasing the dose above 1.5 gm does not usually lead to further benefit. Doses in excess of 1 gm daily may be taken in 2 divided doses, before the morning and evening meals.
