Nialamide
Nialamide, a hydrazine derivative, is an irreversible inhibitor
Of monoamine oxidase types A and B (sec Phenelzine).
Nialamide is used in the treatment of depression, but the risks
associated with irreversible, nonselective MAOls usually mean
that other antidepressants are preferred. It is given in usual
initial doses of 150 to 200 mg daily by mouth. The dose is
adjusted according to response; usual maintenance doses are 75 to
150 mg daily. In severe depression doses of up to 300 mg daily
may be given.
Nialamide should be withdrawn gradually to reduce the risk
of withdrawal symptoms.
