Monograph: |
Tetraethylthiuram monosulphide.
Adverse Effects and Precautions
An erythematous rash has occasionally been reported. Mono
sulfiram produces effects similar to those of disulfiram,
if ingested with alcohol. As there may be a risk of
absorption following the application of monosulfiram to the
whole body, patients are advised to abstain from alcohol for
at least 48 hours.
The reactions to alcohol occasionally reported in patients who
have applied monosulfiram solution resemble those seen
with disulfiram. Analysis has shown that monosulfiram solu
tions exposed to room light undergo photochemical conver
sion to disulfiram. and that the concentration of disulfiram
and the ability of the solution to inhibit aldehyde dehydroge
nase and hence the metabolism of alcohol, increases with the
duration of such storage. Whether patients who have ap
plied monosulfiram solution should avoid direct light imme
diately afterwards remains to be elucidated.
Uses and Administration
Monosulfiram is a pesticide that has been used as an acari
Cide, either alone or in conjunction with benzyl benzoate, in
the treatment of scabies , although other treatment
arc now preferred.
Monosulfiram has also been used as a pesticide in veterinary
practice.
