Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate
Undiluted Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate is practically Insoluble
in water, slightly soluble in alcohol and in ether; soluble in
acetone.
Diluted Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate is a mixture of pentaeryth-
ritol tetranitrate with lactose, mannitol or other suitable inert
excipients. the latter being added to minimise the risk of ex-
plosion. Store in airtight containers at a temperature not ex-
ceeding 40Β°. Protect from light.
CAUTION. Undiluted pentaerythritol tetranitrate can be ex-
ploded by percussion or excessive heat.
Pentaerythritol tetranitrate is a vasodilator with general prop-
erties similar to those of glyceryl trinitrate but its du-
ration of action is more prolonged.
It is used in angina pectoris in oral doses of 30 to
240 mg daily, in divided doses, before a meal. It is also given
as modified-release preparations.
Pentaerythritol trinitrate. an active metabolite of pentacryth-
ritol tetranitrate has also been used clinically under the name
pentrinitrol.
